Background
According to federal, State and local law, UC Riverside must maintain an inventory of existing hazardous materials at campus locations (labs, maintenance facilities, research stations, etc.). The Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) Hazardous Materials Manager coordinates the campus chemical inventory program. Persons in charge of labs and chemical storage locations must periodically submit a current inventory of their hazardous materials. In addition, inventories must be updated if there is a significant change such as a move to a new room or a significant change in inventory (e.g., acquisition of new hazardous chemicals or a greater than 10% change in your original inventory volumes).
About the Chemical Inventory
The Chemical Inventory Web site is a repository for information about hazardous chemicals at UCR locations (e.g., campus and affiliated research centers). There are two types of access to the campus chemical inventory:
View the entire campus inventory.
View and edit one's own inventory - only approved persons may edit an inventory.
Obtaining a Username and Password
To obtain your user name and password, contact the Hazardous Materials Manager at (951-827-5528).
Minimum Software Requirements

The Inventory is accessible using Netscape version 6.0 or higher and Internet Explorer version 5.5 or higher using either a Macintosh or PC. Your connection speed will affect the speed of the data transfer (e.g., a dial up modem will not be as fast as an Ethernet connection).

Alternatives to Updating On-line

On-line updates are the preferred method for inventory revision. If you cannot access the Internet you may submit your inventory using electronic medium (disk or CD). Using an Excel spreadsheet, submit the following information for each chemical container at your location. Please list each container on a separate line.
o Exact location (e.g., EH&S Warehouse, room 1)
o Chemical name (e.g., Acetone)
o Container size and units (e.g., 1 gallon)
o Container type (e.g., glass bottle, plastic bottle, metal can)
o Chemical manufacturer (e.g., Aldrich)
Submit your inventory to EH&S. Keep a copy of your inventory.

Reporting Radioactive Materials
Do not include radioactive materials in your chemical inventory. For information about radioactive materials inventory and tracking, contact Radiation Safety (951-827-5528).
Reporting Biological Materials and Etiologic Agents
Do not include biological materials or etiologic agents in your chemical inventory. For information about biological materials and etiologic agent inventory and tracking, contact the Campus Biosafety Officer (951-827-5528).
Access and Security
Any campus employee may be issued a username and password to view the campus chemical inventory. Permissions to edit an inventory are assigned to the person(s) responsible for the chemicals or their designee. To ensure your inventory is secure, it is important to follow standard password security practices:
  • Never share your username or password with others.
  • Use password you can easily remember; do not write it down. If you do forget your username or password, contact the EH&S Hazardous Materials Program Manager (951-827-5528).
