Background
Federal, state, and local regulations require UC Riverside to inventory the types and quantities of its hazardous materials. The Chemical Inventory Program is coordinated by UCR Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), tracks and reports the storage and use of hazardous materials. The inventory assists emergency responders, provides campus users with specific hazard and storage information, and reminds users to dispose of chemicals before they become unsafe or expensive to dispose. A hazardous material is any material that, because of its quantity, concentration, physical characteristics, or chemical characteristics, poses a significant present or potential hazard to human health and safety or to the environment if released. Principal investigators, supervisors, storeroom managers, and anyone else in charge of areas where hazardous materials are stored are required to complete a chemical inventory
Materials that need to be inventoried (with examples)
Laboratory Chemicals: corrosives, flammables, reactives, toxins (acids, bases, solvents, toxic substances, reactive chemicals, halogenated compounds, acrylamide, mixtures of hazardous chemicals, etc.)
Compressed gases: pressurized gas cylinders of pure or mixtures of gasses of all types except compressed air
Liquids under pressure: liquid nitrogen, liquid oxygen, propane, chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants, etc.
Paints and inks: water and oil-based paints, spray paints, printing inks or pastes, etc.
Solvents: degreasers, kerosene, paint thinners, cleaners, etc
Lubricants: pump oil, hydraulic oil, motor oil, brake fluid, greases, WD-40, etc.
Finishes: varnishes, shellacs, floor waxes, lacquers, monomers that form polymers, etc.
Fuel: gasoline, diesel fuel, camping fuel, propane, etc.
Maintenance/Structural materials: asphalt-containing roofing, adhesives, bonding agents, etc.
Grounds/landscape materials: Fertilizers, plant food supplements, soda ash and the like
Pesticides: insecticides, rodenticides, acaricides, fungicides, defoliants, herbicides, etc.
Photographic materials: developers, reducers, stabilizers, activators, fixers, stop bath and similar
Custodial materials: cleaning agents, bleaches, floor strippers, soaps and detergents, disinfectants, corrosive products, ammonia, etc.
Materials that should not be included
Radioactive materials should not be included since it is tracked under a separate EH&S program. Do not include biological materials or etiologic agents. Contact the Campus Biosafety Officer (951-827-5528) for information about tracking these types of materials. Very small quantities of hazardous materials (such as liquid toners and cleaners stored in offices) need not be reported. Call EH&S at 951- 827-5528 if you have a question about whether a chemical or other material needs to be reported.
Procedure for completing a chemical inventory
Download the chemical inventory user guide, which will provide a step by step explanation of how to use the chemical inventory database. If you already have an existing inventory in the system, your inventory must be updated within 60 days of acquiring new chemicals. Remember, if you have changes in room locations to update your inventory.
Minimum Software Requirements
The inventory is accessible using Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.1 & upwards (Windows only), Mozilla Firefox version 1.0 & upwards Apple Safari version 1.2 & upwards and Google Chrome.
Access and Security
Permission to edit an inventory is assigned to the person(s) responsible for the chemicals or their designee. Since the inventory can be accessed using your UCR Net ID and password do not share it with others. If you want people in your lab to access your inventory, you can set up a username and password yourself for them within the system.
